2023 in Review
At Casa di Langa, we demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability through various initiatives in our expansive green spaces. We meticulously managed over 20 hectares of forest to preserve biodiversity, featuring designated truffle areas and paths. Our orchard prioritized ancient plant varieties, employing techniques like mulching and sowing flowering essences for pollination. Synergistic agriculture principles guided cultivation in aromatic palettes, naturally deterring harmful insects. In our garden, we showcased diverse fruit trees alongside raised pallets for vegetables and herbs, complemented by a composter for organic waste. These efforts integrated practices such as minimum tillage, natural fertilization, and organic cultivation techniques. Plans are underway to introduce bird and insect huts that will enhance biodiversity observation and preservation.
Additionally, Casa di Langa partnered with The Wash Foundation, recycling soap and hygiene products for impoverished communities and significantly reducing hygiene-related illnesses and deaths annually. They repurpose recycled soap into new bars, and plastic bottles were recycled or converted into energy. Furthermore, we participated in the local event Circonomia, in Alba, addressing attendees on the intersection of hospitality and sustainability in the tourism sector, showcasing our adherence to circular economy principles. Recently, implementing a vegetable composter significantly contributed to our sustainability efforts, generating approximately 15% of the fertilizer required for the on-site vegetable garden.
These sustainability initiatives earned Casa di Langa prestigious recognition, with the hotel receiving two architectural prizes for our dedication to design quality and environmental stewardship. An honorable mention in the Fassa Bortolo International Prize for Sustainable Architecture, from the architecture faculty at the University of Ferrara and the In/Arch Award for Piedmont, in the category of new buildings, recognized our ongoing dedication to sustainable practices.
Energy intensity (kBtu/site ft2)
Casa di Langa relies on the electricity grid and local PV panels for energy, eliminating natural gas usage and ensuring a fossil fuel-free future for the hotel.
Energy produced from renewables
Grid electricity comes from 100% renewable sources. Locally generated energy from on-site PV panels increased by nearly 10% compared to last year, totaling 22%. Geothermal pipes further increase the hotel’s energy independence.
Water intensity (gal/site ft2)
Water intensity at Casa di Langa has consistently decreased annually. We utilize on-site wells for irrigation to reduce our reliance on external water sources and promote water conservation.
Recycling rate
All waste generated at Casa di Langa is either composted on-site or recycled through our waste management partnership, achieving a 100% recycling rate for the entire facility.
